The dazzling return of a ‘cult’ singer-songwriter

Flavio Giurato is without a doubt the best-kept secret of the Italian singer-songwriter scene. Born in Rome in 1949, son of diplomat Giovanni Giurato (who served as Consul General in Uruguay) and brother of journalist Luca, who passed away in 2024, Flavio is a cult artist for countless insiders and music enthusiasts. He began his career as a songwriter, composing for other artists such as Anna Melato (“Madame Marilou”, 1974). He signed a contract with Ricordi and in 1978 released his first LP, "Per futili motivi", a concept album telling the story of a young man during the Fascist era and the outbreak of the Second World War. The vinyl album (never reissued on CD and currently available only in specialty record shops and collectors’ websites) received considerable airplay on private radio stations, especially the title track and the song “Che ne sapevo”. His following record, "Il Tuffatore" (CGD, 1982), considered by many his absolute masterpiece, achieved great success, thanks also to the TV show Mister Fantasy hosted by Carlo Massarini, which broadcast videos of several songs from the album. Its musical atmospheres—like in the previous record—mix acoustic songs such as “Valterchiari”, “Introduzione”, and “Notte di concerto” with catchy melodies like “L'acchiappatore dell'acqua” and “Orbetello”, plus an instrumental piece, “La stanza del mezzosogno”. This, too, is a concept album: this time the theme is a love story born during a tennis tournament. The album appears in Rolling Stone Italia’s list of the 100 greatest Italian records of all time. "Il Tuffatore"—recently reissued on vinyl—also inspired several well-known Italian writers, including Aldo Nove, Tiziano Scarpa, Paolo Nori, Simone Lenzi, Gianrico Carofiglio, Fulvio Abbate, and others, who wrote short stories published in the 2004 volume "Il tuffatore – Racconti e opinioni su Flavio Giurato", which included an accompanying live disc. His next album, "Marco Polo" (1984), decidedly experimental, did not replicate the success of "Il Tuffatore" and also led to the end of his contract with the record label. As a result, although Giurato continued to compose and occasionally perform live for pleasure, he did not release any new albums for nearly twenty years. In the meantime, his “cult” status expanded, thanks in part to the rise of the Internet, through dedicated websites, downloadable MP3s, and the exchange of rare recordings among collectors. During this period, among other things, Flavio also produced documentaries. "Il manuale del cantautore", a new album of original songs, was released in 2002 with little promotion by Vitaminic, a label that also made it available for download on its website. Thanks to songs such as “Ustica” and “L'ufficialino”, interest from his fans was rekindled and Flavio resumed live performances. In 2014 he released the single “Dogma”, created with Fausto Rossi and Rosybindy, while in March 2015 the album "La scomparsa di Majorana" came out, containing 10 previously unreleased tracks. Christian Zingales of Blow Up magazine called it “...a masterpiece”, placing it second (only behind Sufjan Stevens’ "Carrie & Lowell") on the magazine’s top-10 albums of the year: “...a record that in the future will be worshipped like a sacred monolith”. In 2017 he released "Le promesse del mondo", a concept album about migration, movement, travel, and the shifting of human beings across the world—told through events rather than commentary, seen from many angles rather than a single perspective. In January of that year, Flavio appeared on FolkClub stage for a memorable concert, accompanied by guitarist Paolo Ghigo. After years of eager anticipation from all his fans, a new album of unreleased material is finally scheduled for release between late 2025 and early 2026, along with Flavio’s return to the stage for a new tour. At FolkClub, Flavio Giurato (vocals and guitar) will be joined by Mattia Candeloro (electric guitar), Federico Zanetti (bass), and Daniele Ciucci Giuliani (drums).
